Arahura Greenstone Tours cannot be replicated anywhere else in the world, as the connection to the river and local people is intertwined in history and holds true to the values of Kati Waewae tribe guardians of the Arahura river.
2 hour tour details:
With the 2 hour tour, your kaitiaki (guide) will share stories of Maori and the local iwi about our Pounamu (greenstone/ jade), and the significance it holds to Te Tai o Poutini (West Coast) and Aotearoa (New Zealand.) You will also learn about, and walk along the Arahura River, which is the only privately owned river in Aotearoa. On this walk you will look for Pounamu, which you will then carve into your own pendant with your guide and enjoy a cup of coffee/ tea and a biscuit to end the tour.
4 hour tour details:
With the 4 hour tour, you will have additions to the 2 hour tour above. As well as the above, you will also be taken for a walk to the Arahura Marae grounds (you will not enter the Marae.) A Marae is the local meeting grounds for Maori communities, found all throughout Aotearoa. Marae’s are a fenced-in complex of carved buildings and grounds, belonging to a particular iwi (tribe), hapū (sub-tribe) or whānau (family). Maori often refer to their Marae as their tūrangawaewae – their place to stand and belong. Your kaitiaki (guide) will also take you to the Arahura Pa Settlement, the Maori village or defensive settlement. This tour is great for experiencing true/ authentic Maori culture on the West Coast.
