Teichelmanns Bed and Breakfast

Teichelmanns Bed and Breakfast in Hokitika is a charming heritage-style B&B steeped in local history. Housed in the former residence and private medical practice of Dr Ebenezer Teichelmann—a noted surgeon, mountaineer, photographer and conservationist who was appointed Medical Superintendent of Westland Hospital in 1897. The building dates back to the early 20th century and sits opposite the historic Carnegie Museum Building in Hokitika’s heritage precinct, the setting for Eleanor Catton’s Man Booker Prize winning novel ‘The Luminaries’. The original structure was extended in arts-and-crafts bungalow style in the 1920s and ’30s, and after serving as a private home and medical facility it became accommodation in the 1970s, taking on the Teichelmann name in the mid-1990s.

Today the B&B blends cosy, character-filled rooms with hearty breakfasts and hospitality, celebrating both the architectural charm of its past and the adventurous legacy of its original owner, whose life and explorations are part of the rich tapestry of Hokitika’s story.
